Steel Yourself

Some kitchens are about function. This one is about presence.

Tucked into a residential remodel in NE Portland, this kitchen was built by Circulation Construction and designed by Gusto! Design Studios, with custom steel work throughout by Flux Design that turns a renovation into a statement. The result is a space where every material choice feels deliberate, and steel becomes the thread that ties the whole room together.

The hood above the range sets the tone immediately, a custom steel piece that anchors the kitchen and signals this isn't a standard remodel. Above the cabinets, steel facing continues the theme, accessed by a custom rolling ladder that adds both function and a touch of industrial elegance. Steel handrails carry the material language through the rest of the space, creating a sense of continuity that's easy to feel even if you can't quite name why.

But the real moment, the one that makes this kitchen worth photographing, is the story and a half steel and window doorway leading out to the backyard. The height alone changes how the space feels. What could have been a standard kitchen becomes something closer to grand, with natural light pouring in and giving the whole room a cheerful, open quality that's hard to replicate in a more conventional layout.

This is the kind of project that reminds me why I love photographing residential architecture. It's not just about capturing a finished space, it's about understanding what the design and construction teams were going for and making sure that intention reads clearly in every frame. Just as meaningful is getting to work with the people behind a project like this, talented at what they do and just as good to be around. When a builder, a designer, and a fabricator are all working from the same vision, the result is a space that feels cohesive from every angle, and getting to capture that work so others can see it is a privilege that never gets old.

If you're a builder, designer, or fabricator working on a project with details this strong, I'd love to talk about how photography can help tell that story.
