Light Does the Work

The Oak Lodge Library sits at the heart of the Oak Lodge community in Milwaukie, Oregon, a 15,300-square-foot civic space designed by Opsis Architecture with Johnston Architects as Associate Architect. The brief called for something welcoming and flexible, and the building delivers. Tall ceilings, large windows, and skylights pull in natural light generously, keeping the interior bright and open without trying too hard. It feels like a space that wants to be used.

Outside, Kraft Masonry's deep red brick ties the library to the broader campus while a crisp modern sensibility keeps it from feeling like it's just matching the neighbors. Clean white cladding at the signage panels bridges the exterior and interior, where white walls carry that same calm clarity through the collection stacks, reading areas, and community rooms. It's a project where material decisions made at the street read all the way through to the shelf.
