Mid-Century Magic

While recently on location in Palm Springs, I set aside a day for a personal project — a self-guided tour of the city’s legendary Mid-century Modern homes. Built primarily during the 1950s and 1960s, these residences embody the optimistic, “retro-futuristic” spirit that still feels remarkably fresh in 2025.

Though unified by their era and desert context, each home now reflects decades of evolution — subtle or striking — shaped by 75 years of care, restoration, and reinterpretation by successive owners. When many of these homes were first designed, city code limited construction to single-story dwellings. Architects responded with ingenuity: expansive rooflines, clerestory windows, and open floor plans that invited daylight deep into the interior while shielding occupants from the intense desert sun — an essential design move in the pre–air conditioning era.

Constructed from honest, accessible materials like concrete block, glass, and timber, these homes exemplify how simplicity can be elevated through creativity. Even today, the playful use of geometry, color, and light makes each property feel both timeless and distinctly personal.

It was inspiring to see how enduring these ideas remain — how modest materials, when handled thoughtfully, can still feel bold, joyful, and full of life.
